PROGRAMME DURATION: 2 years.

LOCATION: Gaydon, Whitley, or The National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC) at Warwick University

Hybrid working is potentially available, depending on the area and manager. JLR is a multi-site business and you’ll be required to spend time working with different departments at several locations.

A graduate programme at JLR gives you access to some of the most innovative and visionary industry experts, networking opportunities and invaluable industry insight. By the time you finish the programme, you’ll play a vital part in JLR’s future and build the exceptional long-term career you’ve proved you're capable of.

Arrive with ambition. Grow with freedom.

Software Engineering

Automobiles are becoming more and more reliant on software every year, and modern JLR vehicles feature the most advanced technology in the industry. Before drivers get in our cars, software identifies their key fob and unlocks the vehicle. During the journey, software supports their driving via stability and assistance systems and provides a welcoming and refined user experience through infotainment. Software is also crucial to our new electric propulsion systems, making our software engineers crucial to the future of the business.

As a software graduate, you will rotate through multiple departments over two years, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the organisation. At all times, you will operate alongside experienced engineers, who will guide and support your growth as you become a key member of the software engineering community.

You will have four placements over your two-year programme. Your first six-month placement will be with your ‘home’ team. After that, you could work in any the following departments: Engineering Body Chassis (EBC), Digital Products Platform (DPP), Engineering Propulsion (EP), Engineering Vehicle (EV), Engineering Operations (EO) or Engineering Research (ER). You will be allocated to a department based on personal preferences and business needs.

Engineering Body Chassis (EBC)

EBC is responsible for the majority of content that you see and touch in the car. We work closely with the creative studio to translate their award-winning designs into engineering reality, taking into account performance, manufacturability, sustainability, cost and weight.

Our software engineering teams are responsible for designing and developing software that runs both inside and outside the vehicle, supporting all the features a customer expects from a JLR product. We use iterative and concurrent engineering approaches to provide robust software innovation and integration into both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. To this end, we employ a multitude of techniques, including model-based software development and directly writing code. You could be involved in the creation of these models or the code or provide support and guidance to our suppliers to ensure we deliver robust products and experiences.

From day one, you will be part of a team and will be personally responsible for developing real-world engineering solutions. You will learn tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise engineering solutions that will enrich your capability, raise your profile and accelerate your development as an engineer. This will involve working on new products and enhancing current products from the basic science all the way through to the customer’s hands.

Digital Products Platform (DPP)

Software is a key component of our future cars as the amount of technology in vehicles continues to increase to meet our customers’ evolving needs.

Our DPP team uses iterative and concurrent engineering approaches to deliver real innovation, harnessing a wealth of techniques including model-based software development and directly writing code. You could be involved in creating this code or providing support and guidance to our suppliers to ensure we deliver robust products and satisfying user experiences. In the process, you could find yourself implementing elastic cloud-based infrastructures, utilising infrastructure as code and deploying a variety of scripting languages that will deliver the tools and environment for large software teams.

Alternatively, you could undertake low-level software development to ensure our in-vehicle computer systems provide the best balance of performance, using boot charts, balancing processor core loading and refining fast-boot processes.

Engineering Propulsion (EP)

Our EP team are leaders in the design, test, validation and certification of world-class propulsion systems aimed at delivering driving experiences that our customers will love for life.

The scope of our propulsion systems is far-reaching and includes major commodity groups such as electric drive units, energy storage devices, engines, transmissions and drivelines, complemented by software system integration, calibration and control strategies.

We take a global perspective, and our teams carry out overseas testing and certification in world markets, gather market-specific feedback, interface with colleagues and supplier manufacturing plants around the globe, and collaborate cross-functionally with all of our key stakeholders.

The EP team use state-of-the-art build, test and sign-off facilities to provide the power and driving force behind our vehicles – using the combined expertise of our cross-functional teams to find the ideal balance between performance, sustainability and refinement, while responding to the rapidly changing environmental issues that shape our industry.

In short, software forms the brains of our vehicles. Through our in-house software development, we directly influence the customer’s experience every time they use one of our cars. Via our Agile methodology, automated tool chain and over-the-air deployment, your work will impact real customers right from the start.

Engineering Vehicle (EV)

EV is the key technical department for the product creation process: leading engineering innovation from concept to customer, managing the technical content of programmes, and balancing customer attributes and commodities to deliver and launch world class products.

In particular, EV drives the creation and control of vehicle architectures, conducts diverse technical projects and concept studies, and champions end-to-end vehicle efficiency improvements, whilst integrating systems to ensure the seamless delivery of futureproofed cars.

Software graduates within EV can expect to work in central systems integration, zonal integration or noise, vibration and harshness.

Engineering Operations (EO)

EO underpins technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes plus specialist technical services to deliver our world-class products. A diverse team, EO harness a variety of skillsets, from project management, information management and data analytics to building and testing prototypes. EO are fundamentally involved in every stage of our state-of-the-art engineering process and are driving an exciting transformation in the way we engineer and deliver our products with class-leading technology and quality.

Software graduates within EO could operate as data engineers within a team that delivers coherent and timely data for the product information department, which is at the heart of everything that we produce. Alternatively, you could become a process analyst, working collaboratively with colleagues from across the entire business to transform how we engineer released parts and change manage our bill of material data. Finally, you could become a software developer and help us equip the business with the world class- tools we need to engineer our vehicles.

Engineering Research (ER)

We research, explore and develop technical solutions and innovations that will address the future needs, challenges and expectations of the world, our company and our customers. In short, we want to enable JLR’s transition to sustainable, modern luxury through advancing new technology and innovation that creates value.

ER is an exciting department to work in: we are looking into the future and trying to map what is going to be happening in the world as we identify unmet customer needs and evaluate the technology landscape to deliver innovative products and services. Along the way, you will find yourself using cutting-edge technologies such as advanced software engineering, AI, big data, cyber security, Augmented Realty/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and more.

The ER team is based at the University of Warwick campus within the National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC). We have access to amazing collaborative spaces, a large engineering hall, multiple laboratories and workshops, which help us create proof of concepts and prove our theories, and technologies we are exploring and their scalability for automotive application.

WHATS’S REQUIRED

You will need to hold or be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in software engineering, computer science, cyber engineering or a related discipline.

Having knowledge of the following coding languages will benefit your introduction to JLR and can help accelerate your development: C# C++. MVC, MS SQL, HTML, CSS, Javascript, MATLAB, React or Python.

In addition, you will have a real passion for problem-solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.
