The Company

Proud to be a local retailer. Proud to be a pioneer.

With 15 businesses, around 5,000 outlets, 110,000 people and a turnover in the region of £14 bn, we’re not owned by shareholders. Instead, we’re owned by our six million members. Far from being just a food retailer, we’re also a travel provider, a funeral director, a pharmacist, a legal services provider, and much more.

Above all, we’re proud to be seen as the local retailer and a familiar face that customers know they can trust.

Yet at the same time, we think of ourselves as pioneers. We knock on new doors, meet new people, and go down new paths. And where we go, others will often follow. Back in 1992, for instance, we were the first business to sell Fairtrade in the UK; today, we remain the country’s biggest retail supporter of these products. We are the only retailer to sell food grown on our own farms. And not many banks would turn away £1bn of income because it conflicted with its ethical concerns, but we did.

Ethical, successful

We did so because an ethical foundation is at the very heart of our business. We are a co- operative, and that means that we are in business for a reason: for the good of our customers and members, for the benefit of the community and the wider world. While some retailers may be showing their corporate conscience today, our ethical beliefs and social agenda have been fundamental to our business ever since we were founded in 1844.

Over the last few years we have embarked on a period of reinvention and change that is driving the shape and success of our business. Our brand reflects our heritage in a fresh and modern way. Our outlets are being updated, and we are winning awards right across our business.

Winning, growing

We are winning over more and more customers and members. We are growing our business and our profits, and that is benefiting everyone. We have updated the look and feel of all our outlets, we have completely transformed our food ranges, and our merger with Thomas Cook will create the UK’s largest high street travel network with more than 1,300 shops. Within the community, we are leading the campaign on important issues, such as tackling crime and reducing youth offending. We’ve even donated £100,000 to help support small businesses affected by the urban riots of August 2011.

Join one of our four graduate programmes – HR, Finance, Retail Operations or Business Management – and you’ll be working on plenty of pioneering projects of your own. Even better, you’ll be based in the heart of Manchester In our groundbreaking new head office. Set to be one of the UK’s most sustainable buildings, you’ll benefit from a range of cutting edge technology and radical new ways of flexible working.

What will you pioneer?
