Graduates can improve their chances of getting into the highly competitive NHS management training scheme by brushing up their knowledge of the current practices and challenges faced by the health service, according to an expert.

NHS national resourcing manager Rob Farace advises applicants to keep up-to-date with current happenings by reading up relevant journals and press reports.

Discussing issues with experienced NHS staff, volunteering and previous internships will be an added advantage, he said.

Around 15,000 graduates are vying for 150 places on the two-year programme covering the fields of informatics, finance, general management and human resources, with the recruitment set to begin in October.

Successful candidates will receive salary of £22,000 while they study for a professional qualification or postgraduate degree.

Management jobs cover 20 separate areas across the NHS and are much sought-after. Around 1,000 positions are advertised by the health service on a typical day.

Informed candidates with a good experience record stand a far better chance of getting through the recruitment process, Mr Farace told the Guardian newspaper.

He stressed particularly on a good awareness of the impact on the massive Government spending cuts on the health service.
