Graduates looking to enter the retail sector will be delighted to know that clothing chain Ted Baker booked a rise in sales in the third quarter.

The fashion chain posted an 8.6% increase in retail sales in the quarter to November 13 contributed by improved performance of its stores in the UK and abroad.

Overall group revenues rose by 20.7% in the quarter largely driven by a 76.2% surge in sales in the wholesale business division - attributed to large orders falling within the period.

The clothing retail company, which is preparing for the key Christmas trading season, said: "We have been encouraged by trading in the second half of the year, reflecting strength of the Ted Baker brand."

However, the increase in retail sales in the quarter has eased compared with the 17.2% rise recorded in the half-year.

Ted Baker said it remained "mindful" of the wider economic conditions and stressed full year results depended on trading over the Christmas period.

It expects full year wholesale turnover to rise around 15%.

The apparel chain now has 31 wholly-owned stores, 143 concessions and nine discount outlets in the UK, along with a growing portfolio in the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific.

It is set to open two more stores in the US at the end of November and is planning to launch shops in Manchester's Trafford Centre, Paris and Hong Kong in 2011.
