Google which is planning to open a new operations centre in Dublin has started hiring graduates with strong IT skills.

The internet giant, which currently employs 1,500 people in the city, said the new centre will create 200 jobs.

The offices, situated at Eastpoint Business Park in the city's Docklands, will concentrate particularly on the company's geographic-based products such as Google Maps and Google Local.

David Martin, Google's director of geo operations in Europe, said the jobs boost showed the firm's positive experience since its launch in the city in 2003.

He added: "Dublin is rapidly becoming the multilingual internet capital of Europe and Google is proud to be leading the charge on this and further increasing our presence here.

"We are constantly seeking to improve and further develop our location-based products and Dublin will now be a centre of excellence for this activity."

Google's Europe, Middle East and Africa headquarters on Barrow Street in Dublin at present provides customer support to more than 25 countries.

Stating that the office has attracted talented staff from across Europe, Google's vice president of global ad operations John Herlihy, added: "The new operations centre will build on this success and will strengthen the importance of Dublin to the company as a whole."

The new centre is expected to be completely operational by the end of the year.
