United Technologies Corporation (UTC) is setting up a new energy research centre at Tyndall National Institute in Cork, which will create 37 highly-skilled graduate jobs over the next four years.

The US firm, which provides products and services to the building and aerospace industries, is investing £13 million to establish the centre at the institute, part of University College Cork (UCC).

This move will make the firm the founding member of the International Energy Research Centre (IERC), an Irish government-funded initiative.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Innovation and the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources are jointly funding the scheme.

Enterprise minister Batt O'Keeffe said that the facility, the firm's European research base for energy and security systems, is a confirmation of the Ireland's skilled workforce.

He continued: "UTC is among the world's most respected technologically driven corporations and it is a global leader in its field across a range of business sectors.

"Today's investment is a unique opportunity for Ireland to partner with this global leader in advancing our research capability and creating high-value jobs in the clean technology sector.

"I am delighted that UTC has selected Cork's Tyndall National Institute in UCC, which specialises in information communications technology, to host the new centre."
