Up to 3,500 graduate level jobs could be created in the computer gaming industry after the Government agreed to work out a range of tax breaks for UK games companies, an industry body has predicted.
Richard Wilson, the chief executive of the trade association TIGA, praised the decision which will see the sector enjoy the kind of tax relief evident in the film industry.
He said the change "will more than pay for itself. We predict over the next five years tax relief should result in the creation of 3,500 graduate level jobs, another £457m of investment into the sector, and £415m in tax receipts for the Treasury."
The industry is worth £1bn a year to the nation's economy and sales figures presented to the Government helped cement last week's Budget decision.
For example the combat shooter game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 boasted sales figures of over £334m in its first five days on sale. This compared to the opening weeks of popular movies such as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (£263m) and The Dark Knight (£136m).
