A number of jobs for skilled science graduates are expected to be created under a new Government proposal to create a world-class network of technology and innovation centres.
Business secretary Lord Mandelson said the centres would aim to turn innovative ideas into commercially viable products and technologies.
The plans will benefit a wide range of science and technology research areas including stem cells, the internet, plastic electronics, fuel cells, renewable energy and satellites.
The Technology Strategy Board will look into ways to implement the scheme, which was one of the key recommendations of the Hauser review.
Entrepreneur Hermann Hauser had concluded in his report that Britain needed to do more to capitalise on its expertise in science and technology.
Lord Mandelson said: "I am now determined that the UK builds a capability for the long term, through a more strategic and sustained approach to investing in these centres.
"I want to understand the UK's strengths, weaknesses and where there are gaps we need to invest in."
Separately, the business secretary also announced a £2.5 million scholarship scheme aimed at attracting top quality research students from around the world.
Under the Newton Scholarships, 100 best candidates who have chosen to enrol in postgraduate courses in the UK will each be given £25,000 to fund their studies.
