Three quarters of workers are not planning a job change because of the on-going global economic crisis that has led to fewer vacancies, a survey has found.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) questioned 3,000 employees and discovered that a majority of them wanted to change jobs, with a quarter desiring to switch to a different sector.
The poll found that employees in the banking, finance and construction industries were most likely to want to switch jobs in the coming year, while private firms employees were more likely to consider moving to a different sector.
Claire McCartney of the CIPD said: "What is striking is the high proportion of people wanting to change sector or even change their line of work altogether.
She said that most people are at present not considering their aims and ambitions when they plan a job switch because they are more worried about "job security and finding new work".
Ms McCartney said the poor state of the labour market "is acting like a dam holding back the normal flow of talent".
She added: "Once job opportunities increase, however, dissatisfied employees will vote with their feet and leave, making it important for employers not to take the loyalty of their people for granted."
