Graduate Software Test Engineer - RM
The Role
RM’s Software Development group delivers innovative software that helps teachers to teach and learners to learn. Our international product suite ranges from networks based applications (e.g. CC4) and web based hosted solutions (e.g. Kaleidos, EasyMail Plus) through to large multi-million pound bids involving many RM group and third party systems (e.g. Glow, BSF - Building Schools for the Future).
Within Software Development, as a Graduate Software Test Engineer in the Product Release Group (PRG) you will work closely with Developers and many other members of the business, right through the software development lifecycle. Using the latest ideas and evolutions in testing techniques you will be responsible for ensuring that our varied and exciting array of products meet the high quality expectations of our customers.
As a Graduate Software Test Engineer you will be positioned at the heart of projects, in a position where you can quickly take on responsibility and make a real impact across the business. If you like getting involved in the technical details, like being at the core of a delivery team, enjoy plenty of responsibility and want more than writing code all day then this is the job for you!
Responsibilities
You will recognise opportunities for improvement within yourself, your team and the department and deliver innovative changes that take PRG forward.
Build good rapport with Developers, reporting defects to them and influencing fixes. You will work closely with Project Managers to report plans and progress. You will develop good relationships with other RM departments (Product Managers, Support Engineers, Education Consultants) drawing on their expertise to enable your success.
Work with the project team to design a testing strategy that gives confidence in the software.
Plan the testing, plan and build the test environments, create test cases, execute test cases using dynamic testing techniques, detect and log defects and report progress and results to the project team.
From design and through each iteration, work with the project team to ensure that the software meets requirements.
Supervise the day-to-day work of testers within your project both in our UK and India offices.
Visits to India (typically 2 to 3 weeks, but potentially up to 3 months) to supervise high-profile business critical projects are a strong possibility.
Why is this a great opportunity?
This role is key to the success of our products for our customers. It’s a real opportunity to be extremely creative about how software is exercised to ensure the best possible quality.
The role is varied both in terms of the software you will get to test and also in terms of the development opportunities that it offers, with a strong focus on both technical and non-technical development.
We work in an open and supportive culture, where employees really are passionate about delivering great products that make a positive difference to the life chances of people worldwide. RM lives and breathes its core values: customer success, high standards, respect for others, innovation, openness and enjoyment at work.
Training and Development
You will receive a thorough induction and ongoing product and technical skills training. As well as all the technical and non-technical training, there will be on the job coaching which will involve working closely with your team and your mentor.
In partnership with your manager, you’ll agree a personalised training and development plan.
Within the first few months you’ll be out on site, spending a couple of days with a network manager and in the classroom to really understand the products we sell, and how we make a real difference in schools. You will spend time with other areas of the business helping you gain an appreciation for how the business works together and delivers for our customers. Due to the nature of testing, you will develop excellent business awareness and have an appreciation of many varied technologies.
You will attend national (e.g. BCS SIGIST) and international conferences (e.g. EuroSTAR) and training to discuss and understand the latest industry techniques, using this to influence the future of our team.
During your first year you will take part in a Graduate Project where you’ll compete in teams to deliver a project to the CEO and Board of Directors. It’s a great way meet other graduates and get to know the business as well as raise your profile!
Future Progression
The nature of this role in particular means that you will develop many different business and technical skills.
