Remember a few years or months back when you got that first
graduate job? Remember the feeling of satisfaction and pride (and
maybe a little bit of fear)? Well if you are on
second-jobber.com, the
chances are that you are looking to experience it all over again.
However, those great feelings didn't come for free, they came
because the job hunt itself was over - something that can be a
nervous, adrenaline inducing experience which at times for many was
demoralising, disheartening and even depressing.
Unfortunately, that's part of the package of job hunting -
the good, the bad and the ugly come hand in hand. A positive point
is that there is usually less 'ugly' when looking for your second
job. Because you are currently employed there is less pressure to
get a job, mentally as well as financially. This doesn't mean that
your second job is any less important, in fact it can often be more
important than the first graduate job you landed - you are now
grabbing the wheel more firmly and steering your career path by
choosing which second job to go for.
More blogs are to come on what jobs to go for; should I stay
in exactly the same field/job title? If not, how far should I, and
can I, stray? What is the most beneficial option for me to take?
These are all questions that will be answered, for now just keep in
mind your end goals. If you want to do something completely
different, make sure it is what you really want to do, grass often
looks greener, bushier and brighter on the other side. Selling the
experience on your CV may also take some additional work if you are
changing career lanes as well. More to come on that also!
The fundamental principle is that choosing your second job
should be towards an end target. The questions you should be asking
yourself are what experience will I be gaining from this job that
will look great on my CV when I take the
next step. Thinking this
far in advance may seem a little daunting but it will prove to be
extremely beneficial, even if 'the plan' doesn't turn out the way
you'd planned. On this note, it is important to say that the plan
99% of the time does not turn out how you expected, simply because
of unforeseeable affecting factors, but you get to that end goal in
a different manner and method.
Looking for your second job is an exciting time, not only
because you are beginning to mould and shape your career but also
because most people enjoy their second job a lot more than their
first. Understandably, with experience you are immediately given
more trust, responsibility and usually, more enjoyable tasks to
tackle. Keep focused on what you want to do now and eventually you
will find your second jobber experience to be an immensely
satisfying one.
