The Company:
About us

We serve the needs of our customers, members, communities and colleagues - it’s why we exist. We are the world’s largest consumer co-operative and while our culture and our passions stem from a powerful belief in our ethical values, we’re also highly commercial. The more successful we are, the more we can give back to our customers and members, and the better we can support and change the wider world.

Today, we have 87,500 colleagues, 4,500 outlets, £9 billion in turnover, nearly 5 million members - and we’re growing. Our businesses range from food, farming and travel, to healthcare, mortgages, legal services and funerals.

So when we offer you a place on our graduate programme, you can be sure that you’ll be able to fulfil your commercial ambitions without compromising your values. You’ll maximise your potential across our nine distinct businesses, while we’ll show you how all of our businesses develop and source ethical, quality products and services, and then reinvest a share of the profit they generate into our communities. This is what differentiates us from PLCs - we put our profit to good use.

Graduate training and profiles:
Career Opportunities

We offer two routes for commercially focused, ambitious graduates: Business Management and Finance. Both are structured in a unique way. It’s all about preparing you for the challenges that you’ll face as one of our future leaders, so we give you every opportunity to prove yourself and make an impact on the business.

Business Management Programme

Join this eighteen-month programme, and you’ll be given the tools and exposure to drive your own career path. You’ll choose from a number of business critical projects that span the length and breadth of our wide and diverse business. We’ll give you help, advice and support, but ultimately you’ll ensure that the entire experience meets your goals and ambitions.

CIMA Finance Programme

If you have a passion for a career in finance, then this could be the perfect choice for you. It’s similar to the Business Management programme but, because of the CIMA exams, it takes three years to complete. It includes four, nine-month placements, where you’ll gain specialist knowledge in functions ranging from internal audit to tax.

Training and Development

We know our graduates will take our business forward, so we’ll help you to choose the projects that will develop you in the areas you need it most. You’ll be properly supported, with a senior manager, a coach, a buddy, a personal development plan and advice whenever you need it. You'll also have the opportunity to study for a post-graduate qualification of your choice, as well as having a personal budget of £1,000 to spend on your own development needs.

What are we looking for?

As a co-operative, we need our graduates to have an unusual mix of skills and behaviours. It’s not just about academic achievements, but also about the experiences, opinions and beliefs that make you who you are. Importantly, you’ll be as passionate about a career in business, as you are about our values and principles.

It’s fair to say the programme isn’t for everyone. The business will throw all kinds of challenges at you, so you’ll need to be confident, tenacious, resilient and flexible. Early responsibility and a high profile are exciting prospects, but you’ll need to work hard to earn credibility and respect from your peers. It’s the only way to make an impact.

If you have all these things, or the potential to develop them, plus a minimum 2.2 in any discipline, we’d like to hear from you. Find out more and apply Here

Case Study
Name: Florence Cole
Role: Projects Officer

"I knew I wanted a structured development programme where I was working towards challenging targets but in a business that matches with my values and principles. The Co-operative Group is a democratic organisation, owned by its members and takes a stand on ethical issues, such as climate change. It does things for the right reasons, and for me it ticked all the boxes.

The Co-operative Group is a modern business and a trusted brand. It is a very varied organisation, we have food stores serving hundreds of communities across the UK, and we are also Britain’s largest farmer. The Co-operative Group differs fundamentally from other businesses, because our members are at the heart of everything we do. As a co-operative we respond to the ethical demands of our members and I believe we are a stronger business for it.

I wanted to join a graduate programme that would give me real responsibility and ownership of projects. During my time within Buying I welcomed the challenge of delivering a trial of re-useable containers. This project was critical; the business needed to reduce the amount of cardboard packaging it was using. Although the project was well planned, implementing it throughout our 2,200 food retail stores was a huge challenge. It was great to be given ownership of a project that required such a high-level of operational change.

For me, having the opportunity to work across our varied businesses in different functions is the real benefit of the Graduate Development Programme. You get the opportunity to experience different ways of working and it gives you a fantastic level of exposure. Plus there’s a structured management development programme, with first-class support and the opportunity to study for a post-graduate qualification."
